Special Education Administration Program
Mission
The Special Education Administration doctorate program prepares
individuals for major leadership roles in special and general education
administration.
History
Since 1965 The University of Texas at Austin has had a continuous
commitment to the preparation of special education administration
leadership. In the nation, it is one of a small number of doctorate
level programs for special education administrators.
Context
One could argue that today, more than any other time, there is a critical need for exceptionally well-trained special education leaders. A rapidly changing demography, consistent presence of poverty, changing and non-traditional family circumstances, dramatically increasing numbers of English language learners, and a variety of powerful societal factors, all speak to complexity and non-traditional environments for students today. The determination of disability not difference is significantly complicated by changing diagnostic procedures and instrumentation, philosophical views of disability and evolving contexts of services in general education contexts.
