Genia Antoine named a finalist for a 2013 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award

Genia Antoine, a principalship program graduate, has been named a finalist for a 2013 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award, highlighting her as one of the best educators in Texas. Genia was surprised with the news during a campus pep rally at Plugerville Elementary School, where she has served as the principal since 2007.

H-E-B’s Excellence in Education is the largest monetary awards program for educators in Texas, and among the largest in the nation. H-E-B, in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators, launched the awards program in 2002. The H-E-B Excellence in Education Award is intended to support public education by spotlighting best practices and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators. Genia received a $1,000 personal check and a $2,500 check for Pflugerville Elementary.

Every year, H-E-B asks customers, employees and community members to submit the names of their favorite educators, administrators, districts, campuses and early childhood education providers for a slate of different awards and grants. Each nominee is sent an invitation to complete an application online. Five regional judging panels comprised of former winners, administrators, and university and community leaders select the 40 teacher and principal finalists. All finalists were invited to Austin on May 1-3, 2013 for an in-person interview and to attend an awards banquet.

In addition to her finalist nomination, Raise Your Hand Texas recently awarded Genia a grant to attend the Harvard Principal Institute to participate in the 2013 class of Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership (AOL).
