Intellectual Entrepreneurship
The following Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) web sites provide a wide
range of resources and professional development opportunities available to you.
(1) IE PRE-GRADUATE SCHOOL INTERNSHIP
http://www.utexas.edu/coc/cms/faculty/cherwitz/
NOTE: The updated version of this site will be launched in September and
will include student (grad and undergrad) videos.
The IE Pre-Grad Internship is a mentorship program that connects
undergraduates with graduate student mentors in their field of study to
explore those unique aspects of graduate study that make it distinct
from the undergraduate experience. In addition to serving current UT
students (almost 70 in 2005-2006 from 11 UT colleges/schools), the
Pre-Graduate School Internship brings bright undergraduates from local
institutions (St. Edward's McNair Scholars, Southwestern honors students
and Texas State master's candidates) to UT. Over 40% of Pre-Grad
Interns are first-generation or underrepresented minority students.
The Pre-Graduate School Internship has a budget from the Vice President
for Diversity and Community Engagement (to provide a limited number of
$500 stipends to graduate student mentors who work with a
first-generation or underrepresented minority student intern). In
addition, UT's deans have provided $20,000 for grad and undergrad
students (to enable IE Pre-Grad interns to travel to an academic
conference with their graduate student mentor). Funding for mentors is
also available for grad students working with interns from Southwestern
and Texas State University.
(2) IE DISSERTATION LIST-SERV AND RESOURCES
https://webspace.utexas.edu/cherwitz/www/ie/disslist.html
Access to UT's Dissertation List-Serv (now in its tenth year and
currently subscribing almost 800 doctoral students representing almost
every discipline on campus) and several other spin-off lists targeted at
more specific audiences (e.g., ABD's, Grad Student Moms,
Post-Dissertation and students with specific topic and methodological
interests).
The site also contains sample UT dissertation proposals from the
humanities, sciences, social sciences and arts, advice from
distinguished UT faculty advisors, tips from current and former PhD
students and
recommendations from some of the best graduate deans and national
leaders in graduate education. In addition, there are dozens of articles
and bibliographical materials on a variety of topics involving
dissertation writing and completing a PhD.
(3) IE JOB/CAREER RESOURCES
https://webspace.utexas.edu/cherwitz/www/ie/career_resources.html
One of the most frequently accessed web sites, these pages are a portal
to dozens of local and national resources. The site includes: practical
materials to assist grad students in finding academic and non-academic
employment and books and articles (on how to prepare a CV, write a cover
letter, prepare a teaching statement and philosophy, engage in
effective interviews, obtain letters of recommendations and adapt to
positions at various kinds of academic and non-academic institutions).
NOTE: All three web sites are updated weekly with new resources regularly being added.
