Application Procedures
Please note: It is strongly recommended that you begin the application process well in advance of the deadline to allow enough time for the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) and the Department of Educational Administration to process your information. During peak admissions periods there may be a delay of 2-3 weeks for GIAC to complete its review of materials.
- Complete the Apply Texas Application and submit Statement of Purpose Essay with online application
- Pay application fee or, if you qualify, submit fee waiver request to GIAC
- Submit official test score(s) to GIAC.
GRE: The Department requires the GRE General Test including the verbal, quantitative and writing sections. Plan to take the GRE in time to have the results reported to UT Austin before the application deadline. To be considered official, scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. Test scores more than five years old will not be accepted.TOEFL: International applicants must submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores
The University of Texas at Austin school code is 6882. It is not necessary to also list a Department Code when ordering your scores.
- Submit transcripts to GIAC. There are two methods
for submitting your transcript(s):
a. You can have your transcript(s) sent electronically to GIAC. Institutions that are on the Texas Electronic Transcript Network or which use the national ANSI ASC X12 transcript format (SPEEDE) can provide electronic transcripts. Check with the registrar of your institution to find out if transcripts can be sent via the SPEEDE server. GIAC cannot accept electronic transcripts sent in any other format.
b. You may upload a copy of your transcript(s) after you have submitted your application for admission and paid the application fee. After you have submitted your application you will receive an email that contains a link to the Status Check web site where you will be able to upload your transcript. The uploaded transcript(s) is considered to be unofficial but will be used to process your application for admission. Please do not mail official transcripts or paper copies of your transcripts unless you are offered admission. Sending paper copies of documents you have uploaded will significantly delay the processing of your application. Instructions for uploading transcripts (pdf). Remember, you will not be able to upload transcripts until your application fee is paid. Contact GIAC.
A note about international transcripts:
- If documents are written in a language other than English, complete and official English translations must be uploaded together with the original language records. Each transcript (mark sheet) should contain a complete record of studies at the institution from which it is issued (i.e., the subjects taken and grades [marks] earned in each subject.
- Please do not upload your college or university syllabi with your transcript(s) or mark sheets.
- You must upload a copy of your diploma or degree certificate as part of your transcript. Do not try to upload it as a miscellaneous admission document.
- Three Letters of Recommendation should be submitted online. When completing the “References” section of the online application (ApplyTexas), you will be asked to list the names of your references and their email addresses. Be sure the e-mail address is current and accurate. You will also be asked whether you will be waiving your right to view your letters after they are submitted. Once your application has been received by GIAC, an e-mail will be sent directly to your recommenders with a link that will allow them to complete their recommendation letter online. You may need to follow up with any referee who overlooks submitting a letter for you, as each recommender will receive only one request from GIAC. You will be able to view whether letters have been received, or change/add a recommender, via GIAC's status check page.
- Submit Resume or Vita online. Once you have submitted your ApplyTexas application and paid the application fee, you will be able to upload your Resume or Vita using GIAC's status check page. You must pay the application fee before you can upload your Resume or Vita.
- Submission of a Candidacy Portfolio; its contents are enumerated and described below.
- A Professional/Personal Vita: Be sure to list professional certificates and include information about recent self-development or professional-development endeavors.
- Records of Graduate Courses: Unofficial transcripts or photocopies may be submitted. Do not ask Registrar Offices to send transcripts to us. In order for us to receive your records on time, please request that a copy of your transcripts are sent directly to you, and then you include them in your portfolio. A GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 rating system is preferred, but applications with a lower GPA may be selected.
- Professional Referents: List names, current positions, and current address of three referents whom we may consult. If not apparent from the Vita, give the context in which each person observed you.
- UT Austin Graduate School Admission Status: Application to the Graduate School is prerequisite to becoming a candidate for the Cooperative Superintendency Program. A note telling us (a) the date you applied or (b) the steps you have taken to secure admission status is ample. You must have applied to the University prior to announcement of the finalists.
- The Self-Presentation: Selectors want to perceive you as a person with a profile. We ask you to depict in 3-6 double-spaced pages what you judge to be your peaks and valleys, assets, and needs, as you confront the prospect of being selected a Fellow. Be your natural self--convincingly offer us illustrations and evidence. Compose and write in your own words; artificiality is detracting. Depicting oneself is an intriguing task. We believe you will enjoy it. Head the piece: "SELF-PRESENTATION (one line) of YOUR NAME (second line)," and then compose and write the paper.
Candidacy Portfolio Contents
The portfolio is to be assembled in a binder no larger than 1 inch. The binder must include 5 sections, each of which must be distinguished by a labeled divider. The “Self-Presentation” is the most heavily weighted in the first screening.

Process of Fellow Selection
The process has three sequential stages (1) identifying finalist candidates (2) participating in an assessment process (3) selecting the final Cooperative Superintendency Cohort members. Assessors are drawn from professors in the University, leadership personnel in TEA, school superintendents, former Fellows, school district teachers or supervisors, and lay members of governing boards.
Identification of semi-finalists will be announced on or about February 14th. All candidates will be notified of the outcome immediately. There is no quota limit on semi-finalists.
Semi-finalists will be invited to Austin for an Assessment Seminar on the last Saturday in February. They will be interviewed, engaged in simulation exercises, and involved in presentations. This event is a must for all selected. Please reserve the date. The semi-finalists must pay for travel, lodging, and meals. Due to limited funding, the University is unable to assist with these expenses. In addition, there is a $50.00 fee to be paid to the Department of Educational Administration for Assessment Seminar expenses. Please make check payable to UT Austin. Proceeds may be used in general support of the College of Education.
The Cooperative Superintendency Cohort will be announced on or about March 18th. Classes begin the 1st Monday in June (not including a holiday). The approximate matriculation costs for the CSP is $4,400.00 per long semester, and $3,300.00 per summer semester (two sessions).
