Advising
The Office of the Registrar places an Advising Bar on student registration every semester. Advising bars must be cleared each semester before students can register for courses. All undergraduate students should see their Undergraduate Advisor in their college for advising and to have their Advising Bar cleared. Curriculum and Instruction graduate students must complete an Advising Bar Removal form and turn it into the department office in SZB 406 for processing in order to have their advising bar cleared each semester.
New graduate students must be advised by a program area advisor before registering for courses. Your Advisor will sign your Advising Bar Removal form to enable you to have your bar cleared. Continuing graduate students may self-advise by completing the self-advising area of the Advising Bar Removal form, however, advising is recommended for all students.
You may download the Advising Bar Removal form(pdf) or pick one up from the departmental office (SZB 406).
Continuing Curriculum and Instruction graduate students may email their request to have their advising bar cleared to the department registration representative, Ann Ford, at annford@mail.utexas.edu. Please include the following information to ensure the advising bar is cleared for the appropriate semester(s).
- Your full name
- Your UT EID
- The semester & year for which the advising bar is to be cleared
- The request for your advising bar to be cleared the fact that you elect to self advise
The graduate degree programs within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction all require a specific number of semester hours of coursework depending on the degree. Careful planning is imperative to graduate on time. We recommend that you visit an Advisor in your program area at least once a semester for specifics on your degree program path.
