Master of Arts (M.A.)

The M.A. and M.Ed. programs are designed to strengthen students' knowledge of what and how to teach, as well as to provide educational research experiences. The M.A. culminates in the completion of a thesis or report, while the M.Ed. has a coursework only option. The programs consist of 30 to 36 semester hours, depending on area of specialization and thesis/report option.

MASTER OF ARTS with Thesis or Report

With THESIS

24 hours coursework (18 must be graduate level)
+6 hours Thesis
=30 hours total required*

With REPORT

30 hours coursework (24 must be graduate level)
+3 hours Report
=33 hours total required*

With EITHER OPTION

program must include EDC 384P, Educational Research & Design
6 upper division hours may be counted toward degree

*Some areas within the department require more hours. Refer to individual specialization handouts.

Total hours are divided between major and minor areas as follows:

Major area:
(C&I coursework)

18-24 hours (with thesis)
18-27 hours (with report)

Minor area:
(Coursework outside of C&I)

6-12 hours (with thesis)
6-15 hours (with report)

A student may also elect a Master of Education degree following this outline.
