Masters Degree Plans

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction offers two Masters degree programs in Social Studies Education: Master of Arts and Master of Education. The main difference between the two degrees is that the MA requires an independent report or thesis, while the M.Ed. requires additional elective course work. Both programs focus on teaching and learning in urban contexts. The degree is designed to help practicing social studies teachers extend their understanding of the importance of linguistically and culturally diverse learning communities in constructing ideals of participatory citizenship education. Please contact Dr. Anthony Brown, SSE Program Adviser, for more information about these degrees.

Masters Degree Plan with Secondary Social Studies Certification

For students with a bachelor’s degree in a Social Studies discipline who seek secondary social studies certification, a Master of Education degree in Social Studies Education is offered through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at this time. The degree merges the M.Ed. described above and Texas teacher certification requirements. The program is designed to help social studies teaching candidates develop an understanding of the importance of teaching and learning in linguistically and culturally diverse learning communities in constructing ideals of participatory citizenship education. Please contact Dr. Cinthia Salinas for more information about this program.
