Social Studies Education is a graduate program whose mission is to advance accomplished, reflective, and active social studies education. The Social Studies Education Program offers advanced coursework for individuals who pursue careers in social studies teaching, service, and educational leadership or those who seek careers in higher education with an emphasis on developing theory and research on the teaching and learning of social studies. The Social Studies Education Program also offers opportunities for educators to enhance their knowledge as teachers or develop as teacher educators. Each Social Studies Education student, in collaboration with the Program Area Advisor, will plan a comprehensive array of experiences and coursework that encompass taking core courses within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and courses outside the department, and working with local, state, and national leaders in social studies education.
