Master Degree Programs
in Learning Technologies @ The University of Texas -Austin
Masters degrees (M.A. and M.Ed.) in Learning Technologies (LT) provide students with knowledge and skills of cutting-edge new media technologies, learning theories, instructional systems design, human-computer interaction, and evaluation. They prepare students to be practitioners in various educational settings, such as K-12, higher education, and training in business and industry.
Please note that changes will be made to this document as needed. Course numbering system is in transition so some course numbers may be different.
I. Prerequisite Technical Skills
Comfort and competence in the following computer applications is required for all Instructional Technology coursework:
- email use
- word processing
- World Wide Web browsing and searching
- one personal computer operating system
II. Research Requirements (3 hours)
- EDC 380R: Educational Research and Design
III. Learning Technologies Requirements (15 hours)
Students who have already taken courses similar to the required ones listed below and need course substitution should discuss with their assigned advisor and then seek approval from the LT Program Coordinator/Advisor.
A. Required Courses (15 hours)
- EDC 390T: Instructional Systems Design
- EDC 390T: Advanced Instructional Systems Design
- EDC 385G: Interactive Multimedia Design and Production OR Multimedia Authoring
- EDC 385G: Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning
- EDC 385G: Ed. Comm. Seminar: Teaching and Learning with the Internet
B. Elective Courses (9 hours)
- EDC 385G: Designs and Strategies for New Media
- EDC 385G: Constructivism and Instructional Design
- EDC 385G: Instructional Technology Planning and Management
- EDC 385G: Motivation and the Design of Instructional Technology
- EDC 385G: Technology, Teacher Learning & School Change
- EDC 385G: Technology Scaffolds for Problem-Based Learning
- EDC 385G: Current Issues in Instructional Technology
- EDC 390T: Issues and Strategies For Technology Leaders

IV. Outside Department Requirements (6 hours)
Students can choose courses that fit their research and/or professional goals from other departments and colleges, such as:
- Department of Educational Psychology
- Department of Educational Administration
- Department of Special Education
- Department of Kinesiology and Health Education
- Department of Computer sciences
- School of Information
- College of Communication
Or courses in other departments/colleges that relate to your interest
VI. Additional Requirements

Master of Arts with thesis (6 hours)
- EDC 698 A & 698B: Thesis
Master of Arts with report (3 hours)
- EDC 398R: Report
Master of Education with coursework only (3 hours)
(Available only to students who present evidence of appropriate teaching or related experience.)
- One Elective
Total minimum hours:
- Master of Arts with Thesis (39 hours)
- Master of Arts with Report or M. Ed: (36 hours)
Note: Students are strongly encouraged to take EDC 397P Graduate Internship in addition to the degree requirements listed above.
