ESL-EFL/FLE Doctor of Philosophy Degree Program
Total minimum hours: 67 hours (not including dissertation or any hours needed to complete language requirements)
General Requirements
Course Work
- A typical program consists of 67 hours of coursework excluding dissertation
- Over 50% of course work on a Program of Work must be completed at The University of Texas at Austin
- All independent study or conference courses taken as FLE_96V
- No credit for upper-division undergraduate courses
Candidacy
- Admission on passing the Candidacy Examination (8-hour written examination plus 2-hour oral examination)
- Candidacy Examination taken no sooner than third semester in program with completion of at least 44 hours of course work
- Application for Candidacy required to be filed within one year of completion of the Candidacy Examination
- Continuous registration required after advancement to Candidacy. (Continuous registration is a University-wide requirement)
Dissertation
- Minimum of 6 hours of credit for dissertation (FLE 399R and 399W)
- Continuous registration in FLE 699W required until completion of dissertation. Some exceptions apply. See the graduate advisor.
Course Requirements
Language Component (12 hours)
- Four language/literature/linguistics courses to include at least one relating to social context
Research Component (16 hours)
- EDC 385G Research and Writing Methods in Foreign Language
- EDC 396 Foreign Language: Doctoral Seminar
- EDP 482K Experimental Design & Statistical Inference - Non-Majors
- Two courses in research methodology by advisement
Learning/Teaching Component (33 hours)
- EDC 385G Evaluation of Language Education
- EDC 385G Second/Foreign Language Materials Development
- EDC 385G Second Language Acquisition or another course in second language acquisition by advisement
- EDC 385G Technology for Second/Foreign Language Teaching and Learning
- EDP 382L Psychology of Learning
- Learning course by advisement
- Two FLE courses by advisement
- Three Learning/Teaching courses by advisement
Dissertation
- Dissertation hours (Minimum 6 hours)
- Additional advanced hours in support of the dissertation (6 hours)
