Language of Specialization (9 Hours)

  • Any upper division undergraduate course in language of specialization
  • Any graduate level course in language of specialization
  • ESL 390T  English as a 2nd Language

Language of Specialization: ESL/EFL (9 Hours)

  • EDC 390T  Eng. as a 2nd Lang I: Oral
  • ENG 3---  Upper division or graduate
  • LING 391  Studies in English Grammar

Additional Departmental Requirements

Evidence of teaching or internship. One year of full-time documented teaching or two semesters of TA or AI experience, or completion of FLE 397P.  FLE 397P (3 hours) is offered on a CR/NC basis only and does not count toward the 33 hours required for the MA Program of Work. Students who need to complete the internship will need 36 hours to graduate.

One language elective and the 6 credits of electives may be upper division undergraduate courses (middle digit of course number from 2 to 7). Upper division undergraduate courses cannot be counted in a PhD program of work. Continuation in the PhD program is not automatic. Students must complete application and be accepted into the PhD program at the end of the MA program.

Two courses may be taken on a CR/NC basis.

Maximum of 9 hours of upper-division undergraduate courses in any M.A. Program of Work

Maximum of 6 hours of upper-division undergraduate courses in either education or field of specialization
