Total hours: 30 hours (24 + thesis)
Prerequisites
- Admission to Graduate School.
- 12 hours of upper-division education courses.
- Evidence of spoken and written proficiency in a language other than English.
Specialization
Major Area: Bilingual Education - Total of 15 hours
Required Courses - 12 hours to include:
- EDC 385G - Seminar on Program Development and Research: Bilingual Education (Major and explicit emphasis is placed on the logic and/or methodology of scholarly research.)
- EDC 382E - Teaching Elementary School Subjects: Bilingual Education
and two of the following:
- EDC 385G - Seminar: Language Acquisition or Second Language Acquisition
- (A course in teaching English as a Second Language: EDC 382E, 382S, 384P)
Elective Courses - 3 hours from such classes as the following:
- EDC 371 - Applied Linguistics
- EDC 371 - Spanish Language and Methods for Bilingual Education Teachers
- EDC 385G - Language Acquisition, or Second Language Acquisition
- EDC 384P - Foundations of Bilingual Education
- EDC 385G - Language and Politics in Language Planning
- EDC 384P - Bilingual Child in Special Education
- EDC 385G - Biliteracy
- EDC385G2 - Biliteracy in Literacy and Culture
or other appropriate courses approved by the C & I Graduate Adviser and the Bilingual Education Adviser. Or, for those who have not had Student Teaching:
- EDC 697P - Graduate Internship (Graduate Internship is required of Master's Degree Students who have not had bilingual education teaching experience.)
- EDC385G - Race and Ethnic Relation in Schools
- EDC385G - Social/Cultural/Political Contrasts of Language Learning
Supporting Work - 9 hours
