The Bilingual/Bicultural Education graduate level program offers students the chance to become leaders in a field of growing importance. There is a great and increasing need for educators who can operatein an increasingly multilingual and multicultural environment. The program is designed to help bilingual educators develop a critical perspective that will let them advocate for students, both in and outside the education system. Along with core understandings in curriculum and instruction for bilingual children, our students will acquire a deep understanding of the social processes of language in the United States, the politics of Bilingual/Bicultural Education policy and language acquisition and pedagogy. 

The masters track focuses on preparing current bilingual educators to become master teachers by refining their skills and deepening their understanding of the field. The doctoral program emphasizes competence in field research, which will allow our students to develop new and innovative ways to reachout to students, teachers, school leaders and policy makers with vision and leadership for bilingual and bicultural education in Texas and beyond.

The Bilingual/Bicultural Education undergraduate level program is a teacher preparation program for certification in Early Childhood through fourth grade as an EC-4 Bilingual Generalist in the state of Texas. The Professional Development Sequence for this degree program is a three-semester field based experience in which students take all methods courses in two elementary school sites, Sánchez Elementary and Allison Elementary, in the Austin ISD. Methods courses have a field component offering enhanced opportunities for hands-on experience.  In all methods courses students receive a significant portion of their instruction in Spanish to maximize their exposure and use of academic Spanish.
