UTeach Urban Teachers (UTUT) Program
A Masters of Education degree with secondary English teacher certification is now offered through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. It is offered through the UTeach Urban Teachers Program (UTUT). The UTUT program adheres to the notion of “transformative teaching” which asserts that teachers can transform students’ lives by implementing curricula and pedagogies that account for the socio-historical and socio-cultural needs of the students they serve. This degree is tailored for students holding a bachelor’s degree in English or other Humanities disciplines and seeking secondary English teacher certification. The degree merges the existing Masters in Language and Literacy Studies and Texas teacher certification requirements. This program is designed to help English teacher candidates develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions to support teaching and learning in linguistically and culturally diverse urban settings. As a UT UT participant, students will complete internships and apprentice teaching semesters working side-by-side with a skilled mentor teacher. While taking subject-area methods courses focused on implementing culturally responsive curricula and pedagogy, students will take graduate level courses that pertain to theoretical, intellectual, historical and practical concerns about teaching and learning in historically underserved settings. Additionally, students are required to take at least one course in ESL Methods or second language acquisition and are encouraged to take additional coursework leading to ESL teaching endorsement.
Undergraduate secondary English teacher certification is also now offered through the UTUT Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. This 18 hour, three-semester sequence begins in the summer before the senior year and is tailored for undergraduate students at UT Austin working toward a bachelor’s degree in English or other Humanities disciplines. As a UTUT participant, students will take subject-area methods courses focused on implementing culturally responsive curricula and pedagogy and complete an internship and apprentice teaching semester working side-by-side with a skilled mentor teacher. This program is designed to help English teacher candidates develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions to support teaching and learning in linguistically and culturally diverse urban settings.
