Doctoral Student Awarded TexTESOLer of the Year for 2012

For her exceptional contributions to the field of teaching English as a second language, FLE doctoral student Crystal Kusey was awarded the TexTESOLer of the Year 2012 Award. She was recognized for her outstanding work at the Texas Intensive English Program (TIEP), for her scholarly presentations at TESOL and TexTESOL, and for the many creative teaching materials she develops and shares with colleagues.

In her teaching philosophy statement, Crystal says: "My teaching experiences with students from various cultural backgrounds has not only deepened my appreciation for the intricacies and richness of the English language, but has also given me a deep respect for the people who strive to master it. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to meet amazing students who not only inspire me to think about the world and its people in new ways, but also give me joy on a daily basis." Crystal’s current research focuses on intercultural communication.

Dr. Sardegna, who supervises her doctoral work at UT, says “We are very proud of Crystal. She is a devoted teacher and an avid researcher. Her enthusiasm and passion for teaching and research is contagious.” Crystal follows in the FLE tradition of outstanding TexTESOL performance. FLE doctoral student Nancy Meredith was awarded TexTESOLer of the Year in 2010.
