Bonnie Elliott is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Language and Literacy Studies in the College of Education. She coordinates a field-based, undergraduate Reading Specialization cohort. Dr. Elliott teaches the majority of her literacy courses at Galindo Elementary, a Title 1 school in Austin, where her UT students have the opportunity to apply what they are learning in classes with elementary students across grade levels. Her interest in helping her students create a clear vision of how they want to teach before going out to their first professional jobs is rooted in her dissertation study, focused on how schools socialize new teachers and influence their thinking with whatever new flavor of program or best practice is in vogue at the time. Children’s literature plays a large role in all her classes as mentor texts for supporting her students’ teaching of reading, writing and community building. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and taught grades 1 through 8 in Arkansas before moving to Austin.
