The Language and Literacy studies program offers coursework that prepares students to be certified as Reading Specialists and Master Reading Teachers.
The Master Reading Teacher (MRT) program consists of two graduate level courses, "Literacy and Inquiry" and "Reading and Inquiry." The courses, which include a practicum as well as professional development in reading education, are taught as a summer institute usually held during the month of June at an Austin Elementary School. The institute is also available to qualified Austin-area teachers. In addition to the Institute, MRT candidates must have a Texas teaching certificate, have three or more years of teaching experience, and pass the MRT examination. Teachers holding a Texas Reading Specialist certificate are exempted from the exam as long if they satisfactorily complete the MRT institute.
