Installing TrueCrypt in Windows XP
TrueCrypt can encrypt files into a format that is compatible on both Windows and OS X versions of the software. This allows a Windows user to exchange encrypted files with an OS X user and vice-versa. TrueCrypt is an open source program which is free to download and use.
Installing TrueCrypt
1. Download the TrueCrypt encryption program
Open the TrueCrypt website http://www.truecrypt.org in your web browser. Once the website has loaded, click the "Downloads" link in the top menu.
Once the "Downloads" web page loads, find the section named "Latest Stable Version..." Then click the "Download" button in the "Windows Vista/XP/2000" section.
If prompted, click the "Save" button.
Now choose where you want to save the file on your computer. In the picture below, the file is saved to the Desktop.
After the download is complete, click the "Close" button.
You no longer need your web browser so you may now close or minimize it.
2. Run the TrueCrypt installer program.
Find the TrueCrypt installation program you downloaded in the previous steps and double-click on it in order to launch it.
If a "Security Warning" dialog box appears, click "Run" to proceed.
When the "License" dialog appears. Click "I accept and agree..." then click the "Accept" button.
In the next window that appears leave the default of "Install" selected and click "Next".
On the "Setup Options" screen, leave the default settings selected and click the "Install" button.
After the installation completes, click OK.
If prompted, click "No" to decline reading the User Guide. Then click the "Finish" button to exit the installation program.
The TrueCrypt program has now been installed on your computer and is available in your Start menu.
