How to connect to coruscant.edb.utexas.edu (OS X)

Note: Before you can connect to the server from an off-campus location, you must first connect to the University Virtual Private Network (VPN). After you connect to the University VPN, you can proceed with the instructions below.

1.) Select "Go" from the top menu bar and then select the option "connect to Server..."

2.) In the dialog box that appears, type in the full address of the server which is coruscant.edb.utexas.edu. When you are done click the button labeled "connect".

  • ATTENTION MacOS X 10.7 (Lion) Users: If your computer is running the MacOS X 10.7 (Lion) operating system or above, YOU MUST prefix the server name with "smb://" like so smb://coruscant.edb.utexas.edu. If you do not do this you will get a connection error from the server. If you are off-campus then you will need to first connect to the UT VPN server before you will be able to connect to the file server.
  • TIP: If when trying to upload files to the server and you get a lot of errors about file names being too long, try connecting to the server with this address instead: smb://coruscant.edb.utexas.edu. If you are off-campus then you will need to first connect to the UT VPN server before you will be able to connect to the file server.

  • You can determine what version of the OS X operating system you have installed on your computer by clicking on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen and then choosing the About This Mac menu option.

3a.) You should now see a username/password dialog box. Type in your username and password and then press the "connect" button. Proceed to Step 4.

3b.) You should now see the box below. Note the Microsoft name in the top right corner. If you do not see the dialog box on the right, then that means you do not have the "Microsoft UAM" module installed. Without this module installed, your login information will be transmitted unencrypted across the network. You must have the "Microsoft UAM" module installed before connecting to the server. If you are a faculty or staff member of the College of Education, please contact the computer help desk and request to have this installed on your computer or you may download and install the file yourself.

If you DO see the dialog box to the right, then ensure the option "Require strong authentication (NTLMv2)" is checked and then type in your username and password. Press the button labeled "connect" when you are done.
