How to Password Protect the CrashPlan Program

If you share your computer with someone else you should always password protect the CrashPlan program. If you don't do this, then when the other person logs into the computer and starts the CrashPlan program they will be able to see what files you backed up to the server and restore them to their folder on the computer. This in turn will allow them to access your data. This becomes even more important when you are backing up multiple computers with the backup system because any of your computers connected to the system will be able to restore files backed up from ANY of your other computers. Follow the tutorial below to password protect the CrashPlan program so that it will only be accessible with your EID credentials.

1. Start the CrashPlan program.

First click the Start Menu icon in the lower left hand corner. Then click on the All Programs menu item.

In the menu listing that appears look for the folder named CrashPlan. Then click the program named CrashPlan.

2. Click on the left tab named Settings.

3. Click on the Security tab and check the box labeled Require account password to access CrashPlan desktop application. Then click the Save button to save your changes.

4. Now when you or anyone else attempts to start the CrashPlan program on your computer they will be presented with a username/password dialog box. Only your EID username/password will be able to access the program so that means only you or anyone else that knows your EID username AND password will be able to access your backup data.
