Working with TeachNet
To open folders or read postings, simply double click on them. When there are unread messages in your mailbox or in a conference the icon will have a red flag. Please note that when there is a folder within a folder, the outer folder will not show a red flag if there is a message in the inner folder.
On your desktop at the upper left will be your personal mailbox. To send mail, open your mailbox and select New Message from the Message menu. To address to another TeachNet user type the recipient's name in the To field. It is even possible to put part of a name. The system will either finish the name or bring up all the names that match what was entered. For instance if you enter in "Mike" you will be prompted to choose from all of the Mikes in the system.
To send mail outside of TeachNet use normal email addresses.
To post a message in a folder, open the desired folder and choose New Message from the Message menu. The message will automatically be addessed to that folder.
To send any message select Send or Send and Close from the Message menu.
When replying to messages, whether in private email or in conferences, there are a number of reply options under the Message menu.
Information and policies regarding TeachNet may be found in the TeachNet System Info folder.
TeachNet supports real time chat. To invite someone, select Private Chat from the Collaborate menu. (This might be different in older versions) Then press the Invite button. You can only invite people that are online at the time. There are also open chat areas in some of the folders. People can enter these chat areas by double clicking on the icon.
Most people using TeachNet will see other folders in addition to the folders for their class or project. Please feel free to explore these. The Open Discussion area is a free area for anyone that uses TeachNet. The Instructional Tech folder is for graduate students and faculty in the Instructional Technology program in the College of Education. The UT CoE Public folder is an area for College of Education classes and projects that is open to everyone on TeachNet (and the Internet for that matter.)
Specific private conferences are only seen by those people involved in that particular project.
