Trouble Connecting to TeachNet?

If you are having any other problem, contact the Computer Help Desk.

If your error message is: Sorry there is no FirstClass server with that name on the network. Check your connection setup.

This can mean one or more of three things.

  1. You have not entered or entered incorrectly the server settings. To check this, follow these steps:
    1. Launch TeachNet. In the login window click on the Setup button.
    2. In the Server field it should say exactly: teachnet.edb.utexas.edu
Make sure there are no stray spaces or other characters.
    3. The Network field should be blank.
    4. The Connect Via default is:  Local Network.FCP.  The other options are Dialup Internet.FCP, High-Speed Internet.FCP and Internet.FCP.  Any of these settings will likely work, but you should choose the one that most closely resembles the way you connect to the Internet.  If one of the settings is not working, try another.
    5. Click the Save button, and then try to log in again.
  2. Your Internet connection is not active for whatever reason. To check this possibility, see if you can run any other Internet applications such as a web browser (Netscape, Explorer, etc).
  3. You are behind a firewall. If you are connecting from a school district or business that may have security measures in place, there is a good chance you are behind a firewall. Most, if not all people involved with A.I.S.D and R.R.I.S.D. are behind a firewall.
    1. If you believe a firewall is the problem, the first thing you need to do is request that your network person allow access to port 510. There is a very good chance he will not do this. Try to convince him anyway.
    2. Failing to get port 510 in your firewall opened you can try switching the FirstClass client to port 3000. To do this:
      1. Launch TeachNet. In the login window click on the Setup button.
      2. Click the Configure...button.
      3. Where it says Port number: type in 3000
      4. If this does not work you will probably not be able to connect to TeachNet with the FirstClass Client unless you can get port 510 open. You can access TeachNet via the web at: http://teachnet.edb.utexas.edu. This will not be exactly the same as using the client but you will be able to read and send messages.

If your error message is: The User ID or Password is not valid. Check that you have entered your User ID and Password correctly.

This means exactly what it says. You have entered either or both the User ID or password incorrectly. You should have received your User ID and password from your professor or from Mike. Your TeachNet User ID and Password is NOT the same as your IF account. It is independent of any other user IDs and passwords you might have. If you have forgotten your User ID or password, contact your professor or contact the Computer Help Desk.

Where is My Class Folder?

If you log in and the TeachNet desktop looks like it should, but cannot find your class folder then you may not have access to it yet. Contact the Computer Help Desk and they will add the folder for you. Before doing that make sure you look around for your class folder. It may be in the CoE Public folder or the Instructional Tech folder. It might also be in a funny place on your TeachNet desktop. Once you find it you can move it to a place easier to see.

Whole Desktop Does Not Look Right:

If you log in and see folders that don't look like the normal TeachNet desktop but rather have names like FirstClass News, Reception Desk, Conferences, etc, then you have logged into the server of the company that make FirstClass, the software that TeachNet runs on. This means you have not done your settings correctly. To fix this, follow these steps.

  1. Launch TeachNet. In the login window click on the Setup button.
  2. For the Server field it should say exactly: teachnet.edb.utexas.edu
  3. The Network field should be blank.
  4. For Connect Via it should say: TCP-IP.FCP
  5. Click the Save button, log in and you should be fine.

If you are missing the TeachNet desktop graphic, but otherwise everything else is right, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to TeachNet
  2. Open the TeachNet System Info folder
  3. Open the message that says UT TeachNet Settings File
  4. Double Click the attachment called TN55.fc
  5. When the download is complete, click the Update button

After that you should see all of the graphics. You will also have access to all of the custom forms on TeachNet.

Please note: The above steps will not work if your version of the TeachNet software is older than version 5.5.
