NOTICE!!!: Please read through ALL the installation instructions before you start the process. You MUST enter the settings information given to properly connect to TeachNet.
At the very least, you must know the server name: teachnet.edb.utexas.edu Enter it in the server field on the settings form the first time you launch TeachNet. If you have trouble, please click here.
- Click Here to Download Current Software (version 9.0)
- Click Here for Spanish Version (version 8.0)
Make sure you know where the file is being saved so that you can find it! In some cases you will get a window to select where to save the file. Usually the best thing to do is download the file directly to the Desktop, into My Documents, or directly on the C drive, not inside any folders. If you do not get something that lets you choose where the file goes, it will end up wherever your browser is defaulted for downloads. Sometimes there is a folder called Downloads and the software might be there. If you cannot find the file, select Find from the Start menu and type in FC8315US.exe (FC8047ES.exe for the Spanish Version). Another option is to right click on the web page link. You will get a menu and then you need to choose Save Link As... and then you will be able to select where you want to save the file.
Installation
To begin the installation double click on the file FC8315US.exe (FC8047ES.exe for the Spanish Version) and follow the directions on the screen. (your PC may not display the .exe part of the file name). When the installation is complete you will have a folder (directory) called FirstClass. In all likelihood this folder will be placed inside your Program Files folder unless you specify otherwise. A shortcut will be placed on your desktop called FirstClass.*
Initiate your Internet connection and then double click on the FirstClass shortcut. You should be prompted to complete the Service form. If you have the login window instead, click on the Setup button. If you have no login window, select Connect from the Collaborate or Connection menu and it will come up.
On the form where it says Server type in: teachnet.edb.utexas.edu
Type in your User ID and password on this form only if you want to set up automatic login. This is not always a good idea as it makes your TeachNet account less secure. Do Not change anything else. Click the Save button and then you should have the login window and you will be ready to go.
The Connect Via default should be: Local Network.FCP. The other options are Dialup Internet.FCP, High-Speed Internet.FCP and Internet.FCP. Any of these settings will likely work, but you should choose the one that most closely resembles the way you connect to the Internet. If one of the settings is not working, try another. The Server field should say: teachnet.edb.utexas.edu. The network field should be blank. If any of these settings are not correct, you will get the error message: "Sorry there is no FirstClass Server with that name on the network." You will also get that error if your Internet connection is not active.
When you log in you will not see all of the graphics and some features will be missing. To correct this, open the TeachNet System Info folder and then open UT TeachNet Settings File. Follow the directions you find there.
*You might want to change the name on the shortcut to TeachNet so you can remember what it is.
