Category I Data:
Assessing and Securing Sensitive Information

Data theft is on the rise.

Personal information of up to 26.5 million veterans stored on a laptop computer is stolen when a VA employee’s house is burglarized. Creditcheck company ChoicePoint is duped into giving a crime ring the credit information of 145,000 people. Universities are particularly vulnerable because they need a more open network environment to foster collaboration and the free exchange of ideas. Many universities, not just UT, have seen computer systems compromised and data stolen in the past few years. What you may not realize, though, is that even your computer here in the College of Education may hold sensitive data that needs to be protected. Any computer connected to our local college network is connected to the Internet, so a determined hacker anywhere in the world could try to get at the data it contains.

The Learning Technology Center has prepared this brochure to help you determine if you have sensitive data on your computer, and how to protect it if you do. You are the KEY to keeping College data safe!
