Why We Back Up
At the laptop help desk, we love helping fix people's computers, but there's always one instance we wish we could avoid altogether. Hard drive failures are more common than you might think, and there's a good reason why it's so common.
Take a look here at this simulation of a hard drive and select contamination failure. You'll see that the arm that reads the disk in the hard drive is hanging less than a hair's width above, and therefore, it is very susceptible to scratching the disk. Another reason why laptop hard drives are in an even higher risk category for malfunctioning, is because of the fact that laptops are so thin and compact. With everything in such close proximity, there is much more heat being generated, higher tolerances, and less room to evacuate the hot air than compared to a normal desktop computer. Coupled with the fact that our laptops are constantly being bumped and jostled around, it's easy to see why it's not surprising to see hard drives fail even after two years of normal use.
We know your data is extremely important to you, and that makes it important to us, so check out this page, where we have outlined several ways you can backup your files and the services to go to for when the perfect storm hits.
