Leopard Pricing Change

You may have already heard that discounted prices for the Leopard operating system (10.5) for Apple computers will expire at the end of this month, March 31st, 2008.  The price is now $34 but will be $99 after March 31st.

You are a candidate for an upgrade if you are currently running the Tiger operating system (10.4) and your computer has sufficient capacity.  You will need at least one gigabyte (1 GB) of RAM for the computer to function with Leopard.  The Laptop Help Desk can help you determine how much RAM you will need.

You can purchase the Leopard install DVD at the Campus Computer Store in FAC.

The Laptop Help Desk can also tell you about the features in Leopard to help you consider whether you would like to upgrade.

You can also visit the Apple's Mac OS X site to see a guided video tour of Leopard as well as a list of the new features.

To find out what operating system version you have & how much RAM is currently installed:

  • click on the apple icon in the upper left corner and choose the first option, About This Mac
  • look for the version number under Mac OS X.  Anything starting with "10.4..." is Tiger.  If yours starts with "10.5..." then you already have Leopard.
  • the amount of RAM in the computer will be listed on the Memory line in between the processor speed and startup disk information.  Look at the first number and set of letters such as 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, etc..

Mac OS X 10.5: Leopard

In October, Apple released Leopard, the newest version of Mac OS X. Leopard (10.5) is the follow up to Tiger (10.4). It contains over 300 new features that are outlined here. Leopard disc media is available for students at the Campus Computer Store for $34.00. It is strongly recommended that students buy the optical media in case the need for re-installation arises and you are unable to visit the LHD. Education students can stop by the Laptop Help Desk for a free upgrade and a tour of the new system.

iLife '08

iLife '08 was released just before classes started and is now being shipped with all new Macs. However, LTC training and LHD support will be focused on iLife '06 for the fall semester. We will be ready to fully support the new version for the spring semester.

  • If you purchased your laptop from the Campus Computer Store on or after August 7th and it came with iLife '06, you can go to the store to get a free iLife '08 upgrade DVD.
  • If you purchased your laptop from another location on or after August 7th and it came with iLife '06 you can get an iLife '08 upgrade CD from Apple for $9.95. Click here for more information.
  • If you purchased your laptop prior to August 7th, iLife '08 is available from the Campus Computer Store for $64.00 (a $15 savings).

We encourage you to get the new version when you are able and start learning like we are.
Featured are new versions of all the iLife standards such as iMovie, iPhoto, and iWeb.

The biggest difference is the brand new, completely reworked version of iMovie included in iLife '08. If you have iMovie '08 and prefer iMovie '06, we can provide you with a copy at no charge.

To find out more about the new iLife '08, click here.

As always, stop by the LHD if you have any questions about your laptop!
