View Live Webcasts of Summit Presentations - December 1st, 2009
The Summit will feature a number of speakers who are distinguished national and international educational leaders. And thanks to technology, everyone who is interested in the Summit proceedings will be able to see their presentations and follow along with the discussion. The Summit Web site will webcast several keynote presentations live, and videos of the presentations will also be available afterwards. An online forum will be active December 9-13, where presenters will be available to answer questions and participate in discussions on summit topics.
Mariana Patru, Programme Specialist with UNESCO’s Division of Higher Education, will speak at the opening dinner on the “Global Context of Teacher Education for Digital Age Learners.” Patru is responsible for UNESCO’s activities in the area of information and communication technologies (ICT) and open and distance learning. She frequently advises governments and institutions on strategies to promote wider, more equitable access to quality education through the appropriate use of new technologies.
Tom Carroll will speak the following morning on “Pathways to 21st Century Learning.” Carroll is president of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future. He founded the Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology and the Technology Innovation Challenge grant programs while at the U.S. Department of Education and was the first Director of Technology Planning and Evaluation for the E-Rate program. He also served as Director of National Research Centers and Regional Laboratories at the National Institute of Education.
Gerald Knezek will also speak that morning on “Addressing the Needs of Digital Age Learners.” Knezek is Regents Professor of Learning Technologies and Director of the Institute for the Integration of Technology into Teaching & Learning at the University of North Texas. He is president of the Society for Information Technology in Teacher Education.
Stephen Jury will speak in the afternoon on “The Future of Technology in Education.” Jury is Vice Chairman of Education Strategy at Promethean. He has helped guide the company through a period of tremendous growth and development and has seen it become a major player in the international educational ICT industry.
Also speaking the first afternoon are Susan Patrick, President and CEO of the International Association for K-12 Online Learning, on “Trends in Online Learning: Implications for Teacher Education” and Jim Cibulka, President of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, on “NCATE’s Redesign to Support New Models of Educator Preparation for Improved P-12 Student Learning.” In 2008, eSchool News described Patrick as one of the top 10 national education leaders who have had a profound impact on educational technology. She has previously served as the Director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education and published the National Education Technology Plan in 2005. Cibulka served as dean of the College of Education at the University of Kentucky from 2002 to 2008. His research has focused on urban school governance, school policy, and education accountability.
Chris Dede will speak at the dinner that evening on “Evolving Models for Technology-Based Learning: Effective at Scale.” Dede is the Timothy E. Wirth Professor in Learning Technologies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. His current research explores the use of immersive and semi-immersive simulations to engage, teach, and assess students.
Barbara Means will give a progress report on the National Technology Plan at the second, and final, day’s lunch. Means directs the Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International, an independent nonprofit research organization. Her research focuses on the relationship between technology and educational reform. She has also studied how schools use data to make instructional decisions and the effectiveness of online learning.
