Digital Video in Education
http://www.tsof.edu.au/resources/video/
The Technology School of the Future at the South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services sponsors a “Digital Video in the Classroom” site as part of their professional development services. This rich and well-written guide includes an overview of meaningful ways digital video can be used to enhance student learning, a “how to” section that describes strategies and techniques for shooting the video, and a detailed overview of the stages of project design, planning, production, and distribution.
Meaningful Digital Video for Every Classroom
http://www.techlearning.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=18700330
The TechLEARNING website has an online version of an April 2004 article from Technology and Learning magazine that discusses scaffolds to support students during the video production process. The article is geared for K-12 teachers, but the model can be easily modified for use in higher education settings.
iMovie in Education
http://edweb.sdsu.edu/sciencetg/ie/
San Diego State University offers a website for teacher preparation instructors to help their students learn to incorporate digital video into their teaching. The preservice teachers in this elementary science methods course used video to offer their students virtual “out of school experiences”, model and document their own learning, and reflect on shared events. The site includes streaming Quicktime movies that illustrate these practices. Examples include both video projects created both by preservice teachers and those created by elementary school students.
I Read, I Learn, iMovie: Strategies for Developing Literacy in the Context of Inquiry-Based Science Instruction
http://www.readingonline.org/articles/yerrick/
This online article by Randy Yerrick and Donna Ross discusses strategies for combining science and literacy learning through the use of digital video technology and an investigative approach to instruction. Citation: Yerrick, R.K., & Ross, D.L. (2001). I read, I learn, iMovie: Strategies for developing literacy in the context of inquiry-based science instruction. Reading Online, 5(1).
Digital Storytelling Project: Of War and Remembrance
http://209.197.234.10/kcs/home.php
This interactive website was part of a 2002 project led by the Kansas City Symphony in which students interviewed veterans and shared stories of their experience in war through digital video. The stories accompanied a concert by the symphony that consisted of “works forged by the experience of conflict and war.” The site included the digital story clips, clips of selections from the concert and a page for readers to contribute their own stories.
*The media links from the project are no longer active, but the site serves as a good example of the power of community collaboration and digital storytelling. Links to a number of large-scale digital storytelling projects are available through the Center for Digital Storytelling at http://www.storycenter.org.
ALI - Lesson Ideas Index
http://newali.apple.com/ali_sites/ali/li.php
This is a collection of lessons and activities that incorporate digital media and computer technology into instruction and learning. All of the examples are designed for Apple hardware and software, but they will also work with similar Windows-based applications. The projects and activities posted on the ALI website are indexed by grade level and subject, and each has been reviewed for quality. Lesson idea modules include resources like downloadable lesson plans, correlations with state educational standards (including the TAKS). Each lesson idea contains a Quicktime movie illustrating the project. Two projects that highlight the kinds of activities found in the lesson ideas index are:
- "A Counting Photo Book"
http://ali.apple.com/ali_sites/ali/exhibits/1000507/
In this project, elementary school students use digital cameras and iPhoto to create counting books to illustrate numbers from one to ten. They then pick one of the numbers or objects in the book and write a story about it. - "I Served in the American Civil War"
http://ali.apple.com/ali_sites/ali/exhibits/1000924
This is a middle school language arts project. In it, students assume the identity of a Civil War soldier and write journal entries that portray some aspect of the soldier’s life. Journal entries are expected to reflect the social and historical context of that time period. Groups of students then use the journal entries as narrative scripts for an iMovie video project. The movies include slides of period photos, scenes acted out by the students and music from the era.
The Educator's Guide to Copyright and Fair Use
http://www.techlearning.com/db_area/archives/TL/2002/10/copyright.html
The TechLEARNING website has an online version of an October 2002 article by Hall Davidson in Technology and Learning Magazine that provides educators with a concise overview of US copyright regulations and fair use guidelines. It includes an online quiz and a printable chart summary.
