Texas Education Agency: Math Initiative

Funded

The Texas Education Agency has awarded the Texas Regional Collaboratives $5 million to improve the academic achievement of students in mathematics through the forming of partnerships among institutions of higher education, local education agencies, elementary schools, and secondary schools. This partnership will provide high quality, sustained, and high intensity professional development focused on the education of mathematics teachers as a career-long process to continuously stimulate teachers' intellectual growth and upgrade teachers' knowledge and skills through activities that are founded on scientifically based research and aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Mathematics. Individual programs, funded by sub-awards and awarded to local partnerships known as TRC Math Collaboratives, will each provide a minimum of 500 units of training to mathematics teachers in Grades K-12 though high quality, research-based professional development in the following five components: Teaching Mathematics TEKS Through Technology (TMT3), Mathematics TEKS Refinement (MTR), Mathematics TEKS Awareness (MTA), Math Achievement Project (MAP) and Mathematics for English Language Learners (MELL).
