NSF Academies for Young Scientists (NSFAYS)
STJC-Pending
TThe Southwest Texas Academy for Math and science, administered by Southwest Texas Junior College (STJC) in Uvalde, is designed to reinforce math and science skills taught in area school districts, teach new math and science skills for the next consecutive math and science course and will also serve as a means of early intervention for students who are struggling in mathematics. Participants who complete the STAMS program will possess the necessary math and science skills to continue in STEM coursework in high school and consider careers in a STEM field.
The ultimate success of the Southwest Texas Academy for Math and science will be due to the exceptional staff that will be selected from our region's master secondary teachers/college faculty, leading business/industry representatives and top ranked college student facilitators/tutors. Program staff will use innovative, non-traditional teaching methods coupled with traditional methods to strengthen every participant's math and science skills and application abilities.
The Texas Regional Collaboratives will assist in the evaluation of the program. The Southwest Texas Academy for Math and Science program consists of two components - the Saturday Academy and the Summer Academy.
- Saturday Academy - The Saturday Academy consists of one Saturday per month for six consecutive months (December - May). These six Saturdays will be six (6) hours each and dedicated to reviewing student math and science skills for each participants current academic grade level. Participants will attend a local cultural event for half a day on two of the Saturdays (dates to be determined).
- Summer Academy - The Summer Academy consists of an intensive four-week (32 hours per week/128 hours each summer) program, which teaches students new math and science skills for the next consecutive math and science course. Friday afternoons will be devoted to cultural events.
