The overall goal of the proposed El Paso-Navajo program is to transform teaching and learning for Native American students and prepare the future generations of Navajo professionals and leaders, especially in the critical areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Teachers will be provided with a minimum of 100 contact hours of professional development to prepare them to become Science Teachers Mentors (STMs). Each STM will be supported to mentor and provide technical assistance to a cadre of three teachers.

The TRC will establish a Scholarship Program that will identify promising Native American students at the elementary grades and provide them with opportunities that will prepare them to excel in high school, assume entry-level positions at El Paso and/or other companies, and pursue their studies at community colleges, four-year colleges, and graduate programs. These students will benefit from enhanced instruction and opportunities to participate in exciting and relevant learning experiences planned to inspire them to pursue science, technology, and engineering careers.

In addition to planning, building, funding, leveraging, and sustaining the three sites through on-site personal contacts and programs, the Texas Regional Collaboratives will provide the sites and participating teachers and students with state-of-the-art online support of professional development, instructional enhancement, and student enrichment resources supported by the latest technologies and will host an online "Community of Practice" for educators and teachers served by the proposed EP-Navajo alliance.
