LABORATORIES:

LABORATORY ASSIGNMENTS AND ACTIVITIES WILL BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS.

If additional time is required, the times and dates will be determined and announced.


PREREQUISITES:

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR
To be eligible to take the Water Safety Instructor course, prospective candidates must:

PRECOURSE SKILLS TEST:

Part I. - Rescue Skills:

1. Long shallow dive into a minimum of 9 feet of water, perform a surface dive, retrieve a 10 pound brick in 6 to 9 feet of water, and bring it to the surface.

2. Perform a wading assist with equipment. Bring the victim safely to the side of the pool.

3. Enter shallow water and approach a face-down victim with a suspected spinal injury. Use the HEAD SPLINT to establish the airway and maintain in-line stabilization.

4. Perform throwing assist using a ring buoy with line attached. Bring victim to the side of the pool.

5. Perform a reaching assist from land using equipment.


Part II. - Stroke Evaluation:

9. Breaststroke 50yards
10. Elementary Backstroke 50yards
11. Butterfly 10yards
12. Standing front dive from deck. 



PURPOSE:

The purpose of this instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross courses and modules specified previously. The instructor course does the following:

INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATE EVALUATION:

To be certified as a Water Safety Instructor, an instructor candidate must display the competencies described below. To receive an instructor aid certificate, candidates must be rated as competent in these areas:
  1. Delivering a presentation
    As they perform practice-teaching assignments of aquatic and safety skills, the instructor candidates have to present information about the skill and the way it is to be performed.


  2. Conducting practice teaching
    All practice teaching assignments require instructor candidates to conduct presentations on specific water safety skills.


  3. Knowing the content of the Water Safety Instructor course
    Appendix I contains one 75-question final written exams covering information presented in this instructor course. To pass the exam, instructor candidates must answer at least 60 of the 75 questions (80%) correctly on each exam.


After successfully completing the instructor course, water safety instructors are qualified to teach the following American Red Cross courses, review courses, and challenges:




AUTHORIZATION VALIDITY

Authorization is for two calendar years.
All authorizations expire on December 31.



Course completion does not guarantee certification.





COURSE REQUIREMENTS


SAFETY:
AT NO TIME WILL YOU ENTER THE WATER WITHOUT AN INSTRUCTOR'S OR LIFEGUARD'S PERMISSION!!!

REGULAR ATTENDANCE: (see "Standards for Grades")

ATTIRE:
Women are urged to wear one-piece suits. Men are to wear suits with a draw-string that can be tied. Suits that stay on are recommended. No cut-offs. Long hair must be braided/rubber-banded or put under a swimming cap. Goggles are highly recommended.

PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS:
If you have any permanent physical limitation that might affect your swimming ability (asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, etc.), I must be informed prior to your first entry into the water. If an illness or injury occurs during class, I must be informed immediately. If you have a temporary limitation (cold, sore throat, etc.) you may choose to observe the class (see "Standards for Grades").

SHOWERS/ DRESSING ROOMS:
There are male and a female locker rooms. The showers off of the pool deck are co-ed. This means in the shower you DO NOT DISROBE! Please keep your swimming suits on and change in the appropriate area.

LOCKERS:
You are assigned a locker for the semester in Anna Hiss Gymnasium or Bellmont Hall. For lockers in Anna Hiss Gymnasium go to Room #1. For lockers in Bellmont Hall go to 502A(females) or 916(males).
For a locker in Gregory Gymnasium you have three options:

TOWELS:
Recreational Sports has towels available for $5.19 at the Gymnasium Store. Clean towels are available by turning in the dirty towel and a fee of .50 cents


WARNING! If you use a day use locker and if the lock remains on the locker past closing time, it will be cut off. You may choose to bring an exercise bag instead of using a locker. Try to keep your bag off the deck to keep it dry. Please LABEL as many of your personal items as possible.

*Conditioning score: Points are earned on Swim Logs designed to be completed during class and at least once per week outside of class along with other Fitness labs in class. (Maximum is 5 points.)


(50%) PARTICIPATION:

Active in the water participation will determine this grade according to the following scale.
You will start the semester with 50 points out of a possible 100 points.
Each absence will DEDUCT 10 points from your final grade.

0-2 absences = 50 - 30 points
3-4 absences = 20 - 10points
5 absences = 0 points
6 OR MORE ABSENCES WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE COURSE



ATTENDANCE POLICY:

  • Attend all classes and check in with the instructor trainer.
  • Arrive 5 minutes early for questions and answers.
  • Bring American Red Cross issued books and proper note taking materials (CLIPBOARD, BALLPOINT PEN OR PENCIL) to every class.
  • Be actively involved in class discussions, ask questions when unsure of objectives of assignments and material covered in class.
  • Be prepared to spend time outside of class hours to develop watermanship skills.
  • Be fully committed to spending these sessions actively pursuing your interest in water safety.
  • ANY ABSENCE WILL INFER AN INCOMPLETE STATUS FOR THIS COURSE AND INVALIDATE THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS.
  • Class begins at the scheduled meeting time listed and meets 60 minutes. All absences are recorded as unexcused.
  • Two absences may be made up (see below).


OBSERVATION:
Students with temporary limitations may choose to observe the class. Each observation is 3.33 points off you participation grade instead of 10 points. Two observations will not affect your grade. The third and each additional observation will take points from your final grade.

TARDINESS:
One point will be deducted from your final point total for each 10 minutes of tardiness accumulated.

All equipment will be provided. Swimming equipment is available for purchase at a discounted rate for all U.T.
