Workplace Area
The workplace area simulates an office setting. Devices and software programs included in this area help individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments to work independently. Students engage in hands-on experiences with devices commonly found at job sites.
Through the orientation, students will become knowledgeable about:
- A variety of AT devices (e.g., Duxberry, CCTV, Kurzweil) for individuals with disabilities (PD, VI) used in the workplace environment .
- Requisite abilities of individuals with disabilities to use the devices.
- Benefits of the devices for the individuals with disabilities.
- How to manipulate the devices.
Students will also engage in hands-on activities with software and devices such as:
- Kurzweil 1000: Students will use this software in conjunction with a scanner to scan text and convert it to speech.
- CCTV: Students will use the device to enlarge text, photos, diagrams, charts, and maps.
- Duxberry: Students will use this software to translate regular text to Braille.
