Communication Area
The Communication Area provides examples of both “low-tech” and “high-tech” augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices to assist individuals who have difficulties in verbal and expressive communication. In this area, students learn the concepts of communication systems and how to manipulate each communication device.
Through the orientation, students will become familiar with:
- The various options available for communication devices.
- Functional communication systems that include a communicative technique, a symbol set, and interaction behavior.
- How communication devices can increase the independence of individuals with disabilities.
- How communication devices can help individuals with disabilities interact with others in their daily lives.
- How to manipulate communication devices, including recording speech and operating speech output systems on the devices.
Students will also engage in hands-on activities with different types of communication devices, such as
- Communication apron: Students will be able to identify symbols and symbol selection techniques.
- Communication boards/books: Students will create a simple communication collection and understand how to use it.
- Eye gaze displays: Students will understand how these items can be utilized and their symbol selection techniques.
- Voice output communication aids (VOCA): Students will be able to record their voice into the device and manipulate the device.
- Electronic communication devices: Students will have the opportunity to let the device “talk out loud” for them.
