Classroom Area
The classroom area contains instructional software, adaptive hardware, and devices for students with various levels of cognitive disabilities, sensory impairment, and physical disabilities. Students seeking teacher certification can work with these resources, which allow those with disabilities to gain access to the curriculum and become more independent.
Through the orientation experience, students will be familiar with
- Different devices that can help students with a variety of disabilities (learning disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and speech and language impairments).
- How devices can help students with different disabilities function more independently.
- How to manipulate the devices in classroom area.
Students will also engage in hands-on activities with devices that support students with a variety of disabilities:
- Learning disabilities: Students will use different kind of devices that can assist students with learning disabilities to read or write. For example, students can use language master and check a word spelling from it. Students will also hear the sound and learn the definition of the word.
- Visual impairment: Students will manipulate different devices that can help students with visual impairments to accomplish academic tasks. For example, students can use Braille 'n' Speak to process words.
- Hearing impairment: Students will use American Sign Language computer software to learn basic sign language.
- Speech and Language impairment: Students will use Speaking Dynamically Pro to experience how students with communication problem can produce speech by using this computer program.
