Why do I have to do a year of directed observation hours?

We want new students to have time to make the transition from high school to college without the added burden of clinical hours in the athletic training room during their first year. In addition, the D.O. year allows the students to get the feel of the athletic training profession and the program at The University of Texas at Austin. This will allow the student to make sure they want to pursue a career in athletic training or a related field and be a part of the UT program before they make a commitment. In addition, the D.O. year allows UT’s staff to make a choice on which students are admitted to the program based on the student’s interaction and performance in the D.O. rotations.

Students are encouraged to use their time wisely to get aquainted with our students staff and faculty, to learn about the UT ATEP and the profession of athletic training and to begin to develop their knowledge base.
